Week 2 Reflection

This week we continued our study of action research.  Through the Dana text, I learned about where a principal might find their "wonderings" and questions.  This helped me think about my own experiences, and how I could use action research on my campus now.  After reading numerous examples in the book, I was able to come up with three topics of critical importance to propose to my principal as possible action research questions.  I feel it was a valuable experience to go through each one and get my principal's view of each problem.  I feel a huge sense of relief knowing that my proposed action research project was accepted by my principal, as this was something that I have been struggling with choosing.  I chose to study the effectiveness of a new in school tutoring program for reading intervention.  I've already begun some background reading of relevant literature and am looking forward to moving to the next step of the process.

  1. I know I am surprised how we all seem motivated and excited to begin our research when research was such a chore when you heard the word.

  2. The amount of support not only from my principal, but from fellow teachers that have graduated from this program is so motivating to me as well. I do am investigating in regards to tutoring. However, I am more interested in establishing a general tutoring program because, honestly, the one we have is very chaotic and not structured at all.

  3. I, too, felt it was a valuable experience discussing topics with my mentor. And the sense of relief was also there when they were approved. I, unnecessarily, was concerned that I'd have no plan approved and I'd be stuck. Also, I love that you are so proactive and have already started reading relevant literature on your action research topic.

  4. Reading intervention programs and their effectiveness will be a great area to research. The fact that you have already started reading makes me think you are excited about the subject. I think it is important that we are all researching topics that interest us and apply to the positions and schools we are working in. I'm glad your supervisor approved your topic. I

  5. As a reading interventionist I will be closely following your research. There are many questions out there about reading intervention and how to make it most effective. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

  6. I deal with students on a daily basis at the high school level that still struggle with reading. I can't understand how kids can make through the junior highs and still read at a low level. Your research will be invaluable to your principal and your school. Starting a tutoring reading program at your campus will be critical for the students who participate because they will be getting the attention needed to be successful readers in the future. I will keep following your posts to see how your research has gone.

  7. I also had a hard time finalizing my action research topic. My principal helped in making that decision, which I too, was relieved once the decision was finalized. The research will be a journey and I know that we will be enlightened by all of it! I will be following you!
